So I got a Blackberry Curve 8900 (CODENAME: JAVELIN) 'round Christmastime, but the dickhead who sold it to me assured me that there was "absolutely no difference whatsoever" in terms of performance between the Curve and the Bold, the two 'berries I was deciding between. Both were 3G capable, he said, both featured stunning resolution & the newest version of RIM's distinct OS, which is what makes a blackberry a blackberry. There was only one teeny discrepancy between the two, he said; the Curve sported a trackball, while the Bold used a trackpad.

So I bought the Curve (BECAUSE I LOVE BALLS), only to find out after playing with it for a while that -- whoops! -- no 3G! lol! (Not to mention the surprise I got a month later, after I opened my first phone bill; tweedle-dumbass, salesperson of the year, had neglected to add unlimited texting to my plan (despite my specific requests (2, count 'em, 2) that he please include that feature lest I get slapped with a hefty overage fee). Thanks to that little oversight, I had sent close to $100 too many texts.

Now, I <3 the blackberry to fuckin' death, but I'm also a mac person who's always wanted an iPhone. So my dad has agreed to give my lil bro my curve & add a second line to our AT&T account (which I can use to get an iPhone).

SO! QUESTION:

The 3GS I want is $99 with a new contract; the 4 I want is $199. Is the new iPhone worth the extra buck? And does anyone know whether they've fixed that damn antenna issue? Should I just get a brand-new 2010 'Berry? Let me know what you think.

Thanks.

Never buy 1st gen, so that rules out the 4g.

Wait a few months, next 4g will be worth the wait.

Dunno much about it but isn't the main difference between the 2 the video chat bullshit or whatever? And if so, there is no reason to get the 4 right now as it will probably take a year to a year and a half for enough people to have one for it to be worth it.

Just get the 3GS?

i would deff. say hold out until they tweek the 4g and fix the annoying problems current models have.

it's really the top of the line, although i have a bold myself and I'm really loving it (BBM kicks ass, especially the app which converts all texts to BBM style messaging) i'm planning to give this phone to my bro and get the iphone

No, not worth it, and yeah I'll give you resolution.

the 4 is slightly faster--nothing noticeable--and includes face time, a higher resolution camera, HD video and a few other small add-ons. as well, it's lighter, "fits" a hand better and supposedly more intuitive.

the software for both is virtually identical, so the only features you really lose out on are a couple of hardware ones and facetime.

if you do buy a 4, buy a fucking case. the thing is basically the most expansive social networking tool known to man, yet some people insist on leaving it exposed. wrap that shit up.

did you not upgrade to OS5? if yr referring to crunchsms or something similar (IM/BBM-style sms), that feature -- along with a number of other niceties -- come(s) standard w/ the new OS. If yr on AT&T, which hasn't officially released an update, you have to download the OS itself and install it using desktop manager.

what I'm saying is, fuck yeah. My berry is seriously tricked out / generally streamlined in every way imaginable. So, everybody else, don't get me wrong; upgrading to the latest & greatest berry is still a serious consideration. I haven't settled on the iphone by any stretch--there are just too many RIM-specific features that I'd have trouble w/ leaving behind for me to jump ship w/o really thinking it over.

That said, blackberries aside for a moment, I'm getting a new phone this week...period. My pops is famously impulsive, esp. when it comes to buying shit (ie "dad? why don't we just try plugging it in?" "FUCK NO--WE'RE BUYING A NEW ONE. A BIGGER, NEWER, MORE EXPENSIVE ONE, & WE'RE DOING IT IMMEDIATELY"), so consequently it's sorta now or never with this upgrade.

SO! MORE SPECIFIC QUESTION:

Blackberries aside, and assuming that I can't wait for the next iTeration to come out, should I right now go with the 3GS or the 4 as-is?

The 5MP camera, the 720p video & especially the battery life are for me the 4's main selling points -- worth $100 by themselves -- not even mentioning the extra 8gb & host of other features. So what, then, are the main problems with the new model? Apart from the antenna issue, of course. 'Cuz to me, the 4 looks like an all-around badass upgrade, and I'd like to know what specific issues you guys recommend I wait for apple to fix in the next upgrade so I can see if they're really dealbreakers.

Right now I'd say I'm leaning towards the iPhone 4 or a brand-new bold, etc. (The switch from tactile to touchscreen keyboard alone might drive me violently insane.)

Your take?

get the newer one, why buy the older phone when you can buy the newest model for an almost insignificant price increase? i never understood why people do that. youre not gonna get a new phone for a couple of years, a year from now youre gonna regret not having (at the time probably) atleast the second newest iphone.

i have a bold 9700 (new bold) and love it, also don't see the iphone hype but if youre set i'd get the 4g.

oh and before you get an iphone i suggest you play with it and trade someone for a day. my friend loved it in the store but owned a blackberry for a couple years. he bought the 3gs the day it came out and 3 days later traded it on craigslist for a blackberry because he couldn't handle the touch screen keyboard.

The 9700 is the 2nd-newest bold iirc; unfortunately they don't offer the 9650 on ATT. And I'm not set...though I think I've effectively narrowed it down to, well, that exact phone actually (the 9700) and the iPhone.

Apparently the new iPhone "can now multitask?" How does that work? Because my curve multitasks like a motherfucker, and losing the solid keyboard, berry OS, dedicated side-buttons & general sense of fluidity that I've grown to appreciate from my curve -- not to mention that when it comes to multitasking, RIM is & has been the real deal -- well, I'm hesitant to throw that away. I've used iPhones before, and if I know anything, it's that the touch-screen will drive me nuts. I type somewhere 'round 110WPM on a keyboard, but I can cruise along @ 80+ on my current phone (compared to, say, texting on an iPhone, which is a horrendously painful process).

Idk. I'm all torn up inside.

iPhone ppl: what does this "multitasking" feature actually do/mean? Generally, how is the iphone for business/organizational purposes?

multi-tasking is basically double-tapping the home button to quickly swap between apps. the apps, when multitasked through, "freeze" in their state and resume when swapped back to. some exceptions are dynamic apps like aim, pandora, et al. pandora will run in the background when "multitasked" and as will other push apps--like i said, aim, facebook, mail, whatever.

i have huge fingers and thought iphone texting would be terrible, but after a month i've gotten to maybe ~50-70 wpm in portrait mode with their tactile feedback. i love the shit out of my iphone.

combined with a mobileme account, the phone is about as good as they come when it comes to maintaining your contacts, calendar, notes, mail and bookmarks.

*edit*

now that i think about it, that's the thing to do. if you really want to push your iphone over the blackberry, you'll have to resort to getting a mobileme account. with that, your iphone will automatically sync (over 3g or wifi) with your mobileme account--this ensures your contacts, mail, photos, notes and calendar are always backed up to a remote source. so if something does happen and you have to wipe your phone, you basically lose nothing other than your apps--which can be backed up in itunes.

also, with location services turned on your iphone, mobileme can track your iphone and send remote messages/remotely wipe it from your laptop. i've used this before and it works wonderfully. it'll locate the phone to within 5 feet of its actual distance.
